Radio Maria visits NB NK Rotary

Polly Barga, a volunteer with Radio Maria visited the NB NK Rotary Club to share the Radio Maria mission with Rotarians.  “Radio Maria is an intercessor, a teacher, a comforter, a guide, a family and a Christian voice in your home,” an excerpt from the Radio Maria brochure.  Radio Maria, Inc. is a Catholic programming radio station that began in Italy in 1983.  The worldwide Radio Maria family is in 60 countries, and came to the US in 2000.  The studio in Minster and the studio in Springfield are the two Ohio locations.  The primary studio for the US is located in Alexandria , Louisiana .  The Anna tower reaches from Bellefontaine almost to Fort Recovery , north to Lima and south to Sidney .

All of the stations in the US broadcast the same programming at the same time, with a few local programs thrown in.  St. Augustine Pastor Father Rick Nieberding of Minster hosts a program each Monday.  Radio Maria also broadcasts the Mass Celebrations of local Catholic parishes.  The programming offers Catholic teaching, prayer, intercessory prayer worship, music and also a great deal of human development content as well.  “The human development, which is a big part of Radio Maria is not specifically Catholic,” said Barga.  The station broadcasts programming twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week.

“What we’re struggling to do is to increase our output, said Barga.  In order to do that, we need support from our listeners.  We’re trying to get the word out to local parishes and service clubs and get more listeners.”  Radio Maria operates solely on listener contributions.  Radio Maria can be found at 88.7 on the FM radio dial and online at www.radiomaria.us .  The Minster station (Anna tower) began four years ago and Fr. Rick will celebrate Mass at St. Augustine in Minster this weekend in honor of the anniversary.  This upcoming fall, Radio Maria will hold a pancake breakfast fundraiser.  “Arms21 is a program where a listener can commit to giving $21.00 per month to the radio station,” said Barga.  “Seventy-seven Arms21 commitments would sustain our operations for one year.  There is no commercial advertising on Radio Maria.”
