Students visit NB-NK Rotary Club
New Knoxville Superintendent Kim Waterman brought 17 students to
“show off” what they’ve been working on this year at school. “All of
us sitting in this room are very fortunate to live in this area’” Waterman
said. “We have excellent
schools. I am very proud of our
students.” Two 6th
grade students won 1st place in a multimedia contest sponsored by
Southwestern Ohio
Instructional Technology Association. Their
project consisted of a Power-Point presentation on the golfing career of Jack
Nicklaus, using various sounds, images, pictures and features of the
Power-Point software.
Richie Felty spoke about his recent trip to
Defiance
College
to attend the Rotary World Community Workshop.
“The theme this year was the Mayan Empire,” Felty said.
“I was on a team that researched the fall of the Mayan Empire.”
The Voice of Democracy is a speech competition sponsored by the VFW.
The 1st and 2nd place winners delivered their
speeches. Hannah Burkhart gave her speech on heroes, identifying an historic
WWII hero, her grandfather. She
also identified an Iraqi Marine veteran who led his group through battle
unharmed. Rebecca Shelton gave her
speech on heroes as well, choosing the tales of two soldiers to illustrate her
idea of a hero.
The Scholastic Bowl Team has been Mac League Champs for
four years in a row, undefeated in 36 straight matches during the regular
season. Scholastic Bowl matches
run on Mondays during the beginning of the school year.
The teams are asked 100 questions and whoever has the most points at
the end of the match wins. The
group provided a “mock” contest, answering typical questions they were
asked in competition. The students
took great pride in stumping the Rotarians on most of the questions!
Two God, Flag and Country speech contest winners presented their
speeches from the popular Fraternal Order of the Eagles contest.
Marcus Nitshcke spoke about his great-grandfather, wearing the dress
military hat while speaking in the person of his great-grandfather, then back
in the narrative without the hat, as himself.
Brianna Jurosic spoke about the freedoms we enjoy in our country,
paying tribute to those who fought to secure our freedom.
She identified soldiers and great American leaders like Martin Luther
King Jr.
Rebecca Shelton, Hannah Burkhart, Desiree Etchison and Ruby Hovey closed
the program singing beautiful arrangements of “Lean on Me” and then the
popular recent hit “I’m Yours.” They
performed a cappella, without accompaniment.
Waterman pointed out that nearly all of these projects were volunteer
efforts, giving the students the opportunity to showcase their abilities and
talents. “It is an honor
to be able to showcase some of our finest at New Knoxville,” Waterman said.
“Our nation is in good hands when we have kids like this.”
All of the students did an excellent job, and represented
New
Knoxville
School
wonderfully!
