New Bremen HS Baseball Coach visits NB NK Rotary

New Bremen High School head baseball coach Greg Cox visited the NB NK Rotary club to talk baseball.  Rotarian and Assistant Coach Jeff Piper introduced Coach Cox and they each expressed a great deal of gratitude for the special time they’ve had with the boys, especially with this year’s senior class.

2010 New Bremen baseball program has 32 players across the varsity, junior varsity and freshmen teams.  “For a small school like New Bremen, having three teams says a lot,” Cox said.  “We have a great summer program in town that helps build these numbers and we have a lot of volunteers to thank for that.”  Coach Cox proudly introduced the three returning lettermen in the program, seniors Spencer Rohr, Bryce Imwalle and Andy Timmerman.  Rohr is headed to the University of Dayton to play baseball, Imwalle is headed to Bowling Green to play baseball and Timmerman is still deciding his college future.  All of the boys have excellent academics ranging from 3.5-3.9 GPA.

The 2009 season saw the Cardinals finish 13-11, entering post-season as the #2 seed in the Division IV district tournament.  They were ultimately eliminated by Crestview after coming back from a 9-5 deficit in the bottom of the 7th to lose 9-8. The Cardinals took away a strong lesson in battling back, not giving up, and being proud of a strong team effort even in a tough loss.  That lesson really set the tone for Coach Cox and the Cardinals heading into the 2010 season.

The 2010 varsity record is 5-11, having just come off of a big win at the Dayton Dragons stadium over Russia .  “We knew coming into the year that we’re going to be young, we graduated 6 of our 9 starters,” Cox said.  “Since our JV was young with sophomores, we knew we didn’t have a lot of experience coming up.  We needed work at catcher, outfield and one or two infielders to build around our strengths at pitching and SS.”

Injuries have plagued the Cardinals this year, claiming two of their three returning starters and a few younger players as well.  Because of this, Cox has learned the importance of a strong succession plan in his program.  “As coaches and business leaders we need to have a good succession plan in place,” Cox said.  “I really learned that this year, and I encourage you all to consider that in your business planning.”   Cox emphasized the importance of teamwork, fundamentals, patience, and hard work. “If we hadn’t prepared like we had, we’d really be hurting this year with all the challenges,” Cox said. “Hard work and discipline pays off not only in sports but in everything we do in life.  I attribute my success in business and life to the extra curricular activities I participated in when I was younger.”

“I want to leave you with one quote today,” Cox said.  “You can choose to be bitter or you can choose to be better.  I choose to be better.”
