Farm and City Day

Rick Williams, Seed Territory Manager for Cropland Seeds, spoke to Rotary club members and guests about the innovative advancements in seed technology that the major seed producing companies are currently bringing to the market place or plan to be in the very near future.

One of the new products he discussed was Roundup ready alfalfa seed.  This soon to be available seed can be sown and then, for weed control, can be sprayed with roundup herbicide to kill all weeds present.  The actual alfalfa being tolerant to the roundup herbicide will not be harmed.

Also, Rick talked about specialty soybeans that farmers are planting to be used to provide soybean oil of the healthier variety with no transfats in the oil.

New corn varieties are being developed which are designated to be used in ethanol manufacturing because their starch content will yield more ethanol from each bushel of corn.
