July 15, 2003 Meeting

Topic:        Agriculture in Cuba

Presenter:   Jay Fledderjohann
Jay Fledderjohann traveled to Cuba with 20 to 25 other Farm Bureau members to study the state of agriculture in Cuba.  Jay reported that Cuba is about the size and population of Ohio.

Most agriculture in Cuba is done w/ primitive means.  For example most cows are milked by hand.  Also most production agriculture is down by hand.  There are over 400,000 oxen teams in use in Cuba today.

Cuba used to get all of their fertilizer from the USSR, but since the decline of Soviet bloc, that support has gone away.  As a result ag. production has declined by 50 to 70%.

Other News: The Lock One Historical plaque was dedicated at noon today.

Hosting Rotarian: Steve Koenig
